Children come from Socially and economically disadvantaged families in the neighbourhood and some families displaced from the Besant Nagar suburb.

The parents are mostly poor fisherfolk, coolies, housemaids whose family incomes hover between 10,000 INR and 20,000 INR per annum (USD 250 to 500).

The fluctuating nature of incomes and the nature of the work leaves many men underemployed and frustrated. It is sad that our children therefore live with domestic violence, alcoholism, women and child abuse, and among elders who sometimes exploit such situations.

The school attempts to support the underprivileged children through free education. OMHSS is a vibrant, happy and dynamic place for children and teachers.
